Photo Essay: Elmwood Cemetery

- by Alane Furlotte, Saturday, December 22nd, 2007

Established in 1852, Elmwood is Shelby County’s oldest active cemetery. Its impressive collection of Victorian funeral sculpture has been an inspiration to many artists and photographers over the years, professional and amateur alike. I take a personal interest in the rich symbolism present in many of the monuments – the intricately carved angels, draped urns, and stone tree trunks crawling with ivy – all with their own special meaning to honor the deceased. The following photographs are but a sample of the variety of historic sculpture you will find as you stroll through the cemetery’s gently rolling grounds.
